QUESTION: Is it possible for you get pregnant while you on your period?
ANSWER: It all depends when ovulation pans out in your menstruation cycle.
When ovulation occurs it is different for each woman, so there is no defined way to calculate this. Even your own ovulation varies. Also, you can only get pregnant from having sex on your period especially when you ovulate early in your cycle or if your period lasts longer than the average 5 days.
However, getting pregnant on your period is not likely for most women, but is not an impossible possibility. The answer to this lies in fully understanding a woman’s fertile window of opportunity.
During your cycle, when can you get pregnant?
Women have a short fertile window that only lasts approximately six days per cycle. Meanwhile, a man is fertile every day of the year. You may be asking yourself why only six days? And the answer is that calculated by the lifespan of the egg and sperm. Sperm can live up to five days in the fallopian tubes because they are the right living conditions for them. When the egg is released it only has 12 to 24 hours to fertilized by the sperm or else it will die. You can calculate the fertility window beginning with the five days before ovulation and ending on the day of ovulation.
Can you get pregnant while you on your period?
This is the question of the hour and yes – it is possible. The earlier you ovulate the sooner you can you will hit your fertility window since your fertility window is five days before you get your cycle. However, it is important to note that not all fertile days are created equal and can happen at a different time of your cycle. For example, if you are ovulating on the 14th day of your cycle then your fertile window will begin on day 9. However, if you ovulate earlier like on day 8 then your fertility window would be on day 3. The days closer to your ovulation do increase your chances of getting pregnant than the last days of your cycle.
Is getting pregnant when you are on your period likely to happen? No.
We say this because just how likely is it for you to ovulate early enough in your cycle that your fertile window begins during menstruation. Women whose cycles usually last 27 days or less than that are more likely to have their fertile windows begin when they are on their periods. It has been by estimated by the IBID, that only two percent of women are in the fertile window by the fourth day of their cycle compared to 17 percent by the seventh day.
There you have it, ladies. There is a chance of you getting pregnant while you are on your period, but it all depends on your fertility window. And remember that your fertility window varies from cycle to cycle!
