When a couple is having fertility issues they often turn to IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) in order to have that child they have longed for. Often when a couple goes through the IVF procedure they produce several eggs to be fertilized, although they only need one to have the child. So what should they do with the unused eggs and embryos?
Freeze embryos
Typically when they go through all the steps they wind up having extra embryos and so they will freeze them to use later if they decide to have children again. If they choose not to use them they can donate them to another couple who are unable to produce their own.
Freeze eggs
Some women however may have eggs taken and frozen to use later. They may do this because they are too busy with a career to think about having children right now but they may want to have children later. Because of this they can freeze eggs to use later as a precaution in case they are unable to produce eggs later.
Couples or single
Whether the woman is single or it is a couple can also be a factor in whether they freeze eggs or embryos. If it is a single woman then she may freeze her eggs only because she doesn’t have a father in mind and so there is no sperm to fertilize the eggs yet. Although a couple can freeze eggs or embryos, they may be more likely to freeze embryos because they have fertilized eggs to use in the IVF procedure and have embryos left.
