Most people know that in vitro fertilization (IVF) is an artificial way of creating a pregnancy, but what does it actually entail? Here are the four basic steps to the IVF process.
Follicle Stimulation
Doctors will use follicle stimulating injection IVF prescriptions such as Repronex 75 IU, Bravelle 75 IU or other medicines from a fertility pharmacy to increase the number of follicles and eggs that the woman’s body produces. The IVF meds stimulate follicle growth and egg development for 8 to 10 days. The process is monitored by ultrasound and blood testing.
Egg Retrieval
When at least three of the follicles are mature, the next step is egg retrieval. This procedure is done with a transvaginal ultrasound to remove the eggs. The woman is put under anesthesia, and the process takes no more than 15 minutes.
Fertilization
The retrieved eggs are next fertilized in a laboratory with selected sperm. An ICSI procedure may be used to help the fertilization process if eggs or sperm are of low quality. The embryos are given time to culture in the lab for 2-6 days.
Embryo Transfer
The last step in the process is to put the embryos into the woman’s uterus. If the process works, one or more of them will implant and develop into a healthy pregnancy.
If the woman has any eggs leftover from fertilization, she and her partner may opt to freeze them to use for future pregnancies.
