Each day many prospective parents are told they will not be able to conceive a child naturally. In order to have their own child, many patients’ only choice is to undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF). As difficult as this may be to accept, the toughest part of this reality is that IVF can cost between $10,000 and $15,000 for one round which may only have a ten to fifteen percent success rate. Additionally, most insurance providers do not offer coverage for much of this cost, if they cover any at all.
Many prospective parents simply can’t afford IVF. This means that their dreams of having a child may either be put on hold or dashed altogether. Fortunately for some in this situation, there are groups that have come together to help families in who cannot afford IVF through IVF grants. These grants put IVF treatments and discount fertility medications within reach for those with financial need.
In a series called Making babies: 21st century families, NPR writer Jennifer Ludden highlights a group called The International Council on Infertility Information Dissemination, or INCIID, that was formed to help financially needy IVF patients receive scholarships for their fertility treatments. In this program, scholarship recipients are coupled with a participating IVF clinic to receive part or all of their IVF treatment and IVF medications for free.
The article also focuses on other programs available to help IVF patients in financial need. Fertile Dreams in Florida offers IVF grants that can be used at any U.S. fertility clinic. There is also The Madeleine Gordon Gift of Life Foundation in Cincinnati and state-sponsored grants in New York. In addition to discount IVF drugs, IVF grants help make a costly procedure a reality for prospective parents who might not otherwise afford their dream. Patients can research these IVF grants and discount IVF prescription prices online.
