Pregnyl 5000 is a freeze-dried powder used for injection. Pregnyl is a “trigger shot” that will be administered approximately 36 hours before egg retrieval. Side effects for Pregnyl 500 can range from mildly uncomfortable to life threatening. Many patients may experience common side effects such as restlessness, headache, irritability, fatigue, breast swelling or tenderness, or water weight gain. Other Pregnyl side effects include depression and injection site reactions ranging from pain, swelling, or irritation to life threatening reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the throat, face, or hands. One of the rarer but deadlier side effects of Pregnyl IVF reported in women was Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). This is categorized by severe pelvic pain, swelling of either hands or legs, stomach pain and swelling, weight gain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, decreased urination, and shortness of breath. For any of these symptoms immediately consult a physician as this can be a life-threatening side effect.
