Pregnyl 5000 is a freeze-dried powder used for injection. Pregnyl is a “trigger shot” that will be administered approximately 36 hours before egg retrieval. HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is the active ingredient, which is obtained primarily through the urine of pregnant women. HCG makes a powerful active ingredient due to the fact that it contains Luteinizing Hormone (LH). Luteinizing Hormone stimulates ovulation and development of the Corpus Luteum in females. With Pregnyl ivf, a female may have the fertility medication administered anywhere from 5000-10000IU of HCG per injection. Pregnyl for men will be administered 500-1000 IU of HCG per injection.
Using Pregnyl IVF Injections
When Pregnyl 5000 is administered, it will either be given in a muscle such as the arm or buttock, or it will be administered into the skin such as the stomach wall. If Pregnyl is administered in the muscle it will be under the supervision of medical staff. In the case Pregnyl will be administered in the skin, many times the patient or their partner will be administering the injection.
“How long after Pregnyl injection will I ovulate?” is a popular question asked by many women undergoing IVF treatment. Ovulation takes around 38 hours to occur after Pregnyl has been administered. Eggs will free float around after 34 hours and at 36 hours is when egg retrieval is scheduled.
Pregnyl for Men
Pregnyl 5000 is commonly used to treat both men and women. Pregnyl for men is used to treat conditions such as delayed puberty, oligospermia (Low sperm count), and undescended testes. Male patients will be administered 2 to 3 times a week over the course of weeks or months depending on what problem requires Pregnyl. In general cases Pregnyl treatment will be administered for a minimum of three months before results are noticeable due to sperm development cycles being 74 days long. During this time any testosterone replacement drugs should be discontinued. If a patient finds Pregnyl has improved conditions, then HCG alone may be enough to maintain sperm count. Some Pregnyl side effects have been mentioned for men such as irritability, fatigue, and restlessness, but nothing too severe.
Pregnyl Side Effects
Side effects for Pregnyl 500 can range from mildly uncomfortable to life threatening. Many patients may experience common side effects such as restlessness, headache, irritability, fatigue, breast swelling or tenderness, or water weight gain. Other Pregnyl side effects include depression and injection site reactions ranging from pain, swelling, or irritation to life threatening reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the throat, face, or hands. One of the rarer but deadlier side effects of Pregnyl IVF reported in women was Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). This is categorized by severe pelvic pain, swelling of either hands or legs, stomach pain and swelling, weight gain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, decreased urination, and shortness of breath. For any of these symptoms immediately consult a physician as this can be a life-threatening side effect.
