Often when a couple is experiencing fertility problems the reason is fairly obvious and directly related to the reproductive system. However, occasionally infertility can be linked to an underlying medical condition. When this occurs it requires various testing to determine the issue so that it can then be treated accordingly.
Underlying conditions causing infertility
When an underlying medical condition that is affecting fertility is treated, that alone is often enough to allow the couple to successfully conceive although this is not always the case. Sometimes when the underlying condition is discovered and treated it is still necessary to prescribe fertility medications, but the underlying condition must be treated first in order for the fertility drugs to work.
Metformin (Glucophage)
Metformin is a drug used to treat diabetes. This drug has also been found to be effective in treating women with PCOS by regulating or restarting ovulation. It has also shown to be effective in preventing miscarriages and aid in the effectiveness of Clomid.
Underlying infections can cause subfertility
Sometimes an infection in the reproductive organs can impede conception. Males and females both may have an infection in the reproductive system that can interfere with the production or meeting of sperm and egg cells. Provided that there is no scarring, treatment with antibiotics may be enough to improve fertility without the use of fertility drugs. However, if scarring is present surgery or fertility medications may be required.
Hormone medications for infertility
Often hormone imbalances can have a negative effect on fertility. Hormone therapy drugs can correct these imbalances and improve fertility. For example, an underactive or overactive thyroid may be the cause of hormone imbalances causing infertility and so medications to regulate the thyroid can be used to correct this.
